I offer commissions for stories of all lengths and across a wide range of genres, though I specialize in fantasy and sci-fi. I can take on everything from writing a short story to accompany a piece of artwork that you’ve commissioned to planning and writing a novel-length work to your specifications.

Commission Process and Pricing Model:
All story commissions are classified as either short stories or novel-length works based on the expected word count. After you request a commission, I will get in touch with you to discuss and flesh out your concept, including any requirements for characters, scenes, and setting. Based on this discussion, I will give you a rough word count estimate based on what I think will be needed to do the story justice. Pricing is based on this estimate and must be paid upfront. Novel-length works may be paid on a per-chapter basis if you prefer, but I will not start work on a new chapter until payment for that chapter is received.
If the final work is significantly shorter than the estimate (1,000 words off the estimate or more), I will issue a partial refund to account for the difference. You will not be charged extra if the final piece is longer than the estimate, provided that the requirements for the piece did not change from those you gave me during our initial discussion.

Short Story Commissions (10,000 words or less)
Short stories are standalone works. They might take place in an existing universe or feature existing characters, but as a whole, the work is self-contained. Most of the time, a reader with minimal knowledge of previous works will still be able to understand and enjoy the story.
Short Story Rates: $30 per 1,000 words
All short story commissions include one rough draft. Expect this draft to take 2-5 days per 1,000 words, depending on my current workload. If you request edits based on the rough draft, expect the final copy to take 1-4 days per 1,000 words, depending on the scope of the edits.

Novel-Length Commissions (10,001 words or more)
Story commissions of 10,000 words or longer tend to be multi-chapter works. These longer stories have room for long-term, complex plots; a wider cast of important characters; and expanded character development.
When you commission me for a longer piece, expect frequent communication from me on the overall direction and concept of the work. I will work with you to identify the underlying themes of the piece and how all the major characters and plots tie together. We will also identify any key scenes that you want or plan to have included. The end result of this session is a rough story outline that will provide the direction for the work.
Multi-chapter commissions may be paid on a per-chapter basis or in full upfront. My chapters usually range anywhere from 2,000 to 5,000 words each, with 3,000 to 4,000 words the most common.

Commissioners who pay for the entire work upfront get an additional 10% off the final price.
For longer commissions paid for on a per-chapter basis, you will receive a rough draft of each chapter. Expect this draft to take 2-5 days per 1,000 words, depending on my current workload. Once I’ve received feedback on the rough draft, you can expect 1-4 days per 1,000 words for the final copy.
For novel-length commissions paid completely upfront, I will send you the first draft for the first couple of chapters that I write to ensure that the style and feel of the work match up with what you envisioned. When we’re confident the overall style is in the right direction, I will start work on the first rough draft of the complete work. You can expect frequent communication discussing story direction and chapters in progress during this period. Once the first draft is complete, I will send it to you for feedback. Based on your feedback, minor edits and additional rough drafts of the full work will be provided at no additional charge based on the overall length of the piece (1 rough draft per 10,000 words).

Editing
I provide editing and consulting services for any sort of written/narrative work, including short stories, novels, comics, and video game scripts. I take all editing and consulting work on a case-by-case basis. Whether I take on your project depends on the type of work and the premise of the story. My specialty is fantasy stories—particularly low fantasy, historical fantasy, and settings centered around unique magic systems. I also frequently write and worth with other speculative fiction genres.
